They don’t require building permits provided they don’t have plumbing, electrical or concrete features in the construction. But homeowners still need to abide by zoning laws and setback requirements and that’s where tiki huts have become a headache for city officials.
Tiki huts often violate South Florida zoning rules. As many of us know in today. All Tiki Huts require permitting. Most of the City and County’s require a permit for an installation for New Construction in the home or business.

What is the difference between a chickee hut and a tiki hut?
Tiki Hut vs Chickee: What’s the Difference? They do have the same cypress log frame, open sides, and the palm thatched roof. Yet, these two terms don’t mean the same. The main difference is that a chickee hut has a raised, platform wooden floor, and the tiki hut doesn’t.

Do tiki huts attract bugs?
Tiki huts and Chickees commonly have roofs composed of thatch, a dried undecomposed plant material that attracts caterpillars. If the thatched roof of your outside wooden structure looks more dilapidated than usual, it may be a sign it’s been infested by the insects.

Are tiki huts a fire hazard?
Yes. When you install a natural thatched roof, your hotel, restaurant, or resort will be at higher risk of fire. If you don’t apply an effective thatch fire sealant on tiki huts, once the fire starts on dry palm thatch, the spread of flame will be fast, making it difficult to extinguish.

Are tiki huts hurricane proof?
The traditional palm thatch tiki huts can go through hurricanes better than the roof on your house. There is no wind resistance. Wind can flow through.
